Compression Boots vs. Compression Socks: Which Do You Need?

5 min read

Compression socks and compression boots both use pressure, but they're very different tools. Here's how to pick the right one.

This is one of the most common questions we get at DWT Wellness. People walk in wearing compression socks and ask, "Why would I need the boots if I already have these?" Fair question. They both squeeze your legs, right? Well, sort of. But the difference is bigger than you'd think.

What Compression Socks Do

Compression socks apply steady, static pressure to your lower legs. They're designed to be worn throughout the day while you're walking, standing, or sitting. The pressure gradient is usually tighter at the ankle and looser toward the calf, which helps blood flow back up toward your heart. They're great for preventing swelling during long shifts on your feet or during travel.

What Compression Boots Do

Compression boots like NormaTec are a completely different animal. Instead of applying constant pressure, they use dynamic, sequential compression, inflating and deflating in a specific wave pattern. This actively flushes fluid, reduces inflammation, and accelerates recovery in a way that static socks simply can't. It's the difference between holding a sponge under water and actually wringing it out.

  • Compression socks: passive, all-day prevention
  • Compression boots: active, targeted recovery sessions
  • Socks are good for maintenance; boots are good for repair
  • You can (and should) use both, as they complement each other

When to Choose Which

Wear compression socks during the activity (long flights, 12-hour shifts, long runs). Use compression boots after the activity to recover. Think of socks as your daily sunscreen and boots as your deep-cleaning facial. Both serve a purpose, and they work even better together.

I wear compression socks every shift at the hospital, but nothing resets my legs like 30 minutes in the NormaTec boots. (Registered nurse, Morris County)
