Post-surgical recovery is stressful for dogs and their owners. PEMF therapy can help speed healing and reduce the need for extended medication.
Your dog just had surgery. They're home, they're groggy, and they're supposed to "take it easy," which, if you know dogs, is easier said than done. The vet sent you home with pain meds, maybe some antibiotics, and instructions to limit activity. But what else can you do to help them heal? More than you might think.
Why Post-Surgical Recovery Is a Big Deal
Surgery creates controlled trauma. The body has to repair the incision, manage swelling, fight off potential infection, and rebuild tissue, all while dealing with the systemic stress of anesthesia and pain medication. How well your dog recovers depends on how effectively their body handles all of this at once. That's where a little help goes a long way.
PEMF Therapy After Surgery
PEMF therapy is particularly well-suited for post-surgical recovery. It increases blood flow to the surgical site (which brings in the nutrients needed for repair), reduces inflammation (which is the body's healing response, but too much of it slows things down), and stimulates cellular repair processes. There's actual research behind this. PEMF has been used in human medicine for bone fracture healing for decades, and the same principles apply to dogs.
We typically recommend starting PEMF sessions a few days after surgery, once the initial acute phase has passed. We're careful to work around incision sites and keep the intensity appropriate for a dog who's still healing. Most dogs find it incredibly soothing, which is a bonus when they're dealing with post-surgical discomfort.
Common Surgeries We Help With
- ACL/cruciate ligament repair, probably the most common one we see
- TPLO surgery, where recovery can be long and PEMF helps keep things moving
- Spinal surgery, where gentle PEMF along the spine supports nerve and tissue healing
- Mass removal, reducing swelling around the surgical site
- Orthopedic procedures including fracture repairs and joint surgeries
The goal is to help your dog heal faster and more comfortably, ideally reducing the duration they need to be on pain medication. Always coordinate with your vet, as we're here to complement their treatment plan, not replace it.
