Back soreness in horses is incredibly common and often goes undiagnosed. PEMF therapy can help identify and address the problem before it gets worse.
Your horse isn't moving like they used to. Maybe they're hollow under saddle, resistant to bending, or flinching when you groom their back. You might think it's a training issue, but nine times out of ten, it's pain. Back soreness in horses is one of the most underdiagnosed problems in the equine world, and it can cascade into issues you'd never connect to the back.
Why Back Pain Is So Hard to Pin Down
Horses can't point to what hurts. And unlike a leg lameness, back pain shows up in subtle ways: a change in attitude, reluctance to go forward, difficulty picking up a canter lead, or just a general "something's off" feeling under saddle. Riders often spend months (and a lot of money) chasing lameness diagnoses when the real culprit is in the back.
The causes are varied: poor saddle fit, rider imbalance, overwork, a stumble in the field, or just the cumulative stress of carrying a rider. Whatever the cause, the result is the same: tight, inflamed muscles along the spine that make everything harder for the horse.
How PEMF Helps
PEMF therapy is actually one of the best diagnostic tools we have for equine back pain. When Michelle runs the MagnaWave wand along the horse's back, the muscle response tells us exactly where the problem areas are. Healthy tissue barely reacts. Inflamed, tight tissue twitches, flinches, or spasms, giving us a clear map of what's going on.
Then we treat those areas. The electromagnetic pulses increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and help the muscles release. Most horses start to relax visibly within the first few minutes: licking, chewing, dropping their head, sometimes even yawning. These are all signs the body is letting go of tension.
Our Approach
Michelle Watts handles our equine cases. She's got over 15 years of experience working with horses, specifically hunter/jumpers, and has worked with around 50 horses in that discipline. She knows what to look for and where to focus. We come to your barn, so your horse stays in their own environment, which makes a big difference for horses who are already stressed or sore.
We serve Northern NJ, Hudson Valley NY, and Eastern PA. Check out our equine services page or call (973) 908-1524 to set up an appointment.
