Can PEMF Actually Help With Migraines?

5 min read

Migraines are more than bad headaches. PEMF shows real promise for reducing their frequency and severity. Here's what we know.

If you get migraines, you already know that "just take some Advil" is useless advice. Migraines aren't headaches. They're neurological events that can knock you out for hours or even days. And the medications that actually work (triptans, CGRP inhibitors) don't work for everyone and can come with side effects that make your day pretty unpleasant.

The Migraine-PEMF Connection

Here's what makes PEMF interesting for migraines. The FDA has actually approved a specific type of PEMF device (single-pulse TMS) for migraine treatment. That device targets the brain directly. Our approach is different (we work on the neck, shoulders, and surrounding areas), but the underlying principle is the same: electromagnetic fields can influence how your nervous system behaves.

What We Target

  • Tension in the neck and shoulders that can trigger migraines.
  • Inflammation around cervical nerves.
  • Poor blood flow to the head and brain.
  • General nervous system overactivity.

Many migraines have a cervical component, meaning tension and dysfunction in the neck contribute to the trigger cascade. By using PEMF on the neck and upper back, we address one of the most common migraine triggers that gets overlooked.

What Our Migraine Clients Report

We've seen mixed but generally positive results. Some clients have cut their migraine frequency in half. Others report that their migraines are less severe and don't last as long. A few haven't noticed a difference. That's the honest picture.

One client went from 8-10 migraines per month to 2-3 over a period of about six weeks. She still gets them, but they went from debilitating to manageable. That's a big quality-of-life improvement.

We sometimes combine PEMF with BrainTap sound therapy for migraine clients. The relaxation and neurological calming effects seem to work well together. Contact us at (973) 908-1524 if you want to see whether it could help you.
