People confuse these two all the time. Both use infrared light, but that's where the similarities end. Here's the real difference.
This comes up constantly. Someone tells a friend they're doing red light therapy, and the friend says, "Oh yeah, I've done that. My gym has an infrared sauna." They're not the same thing. They share some wavelengths, but the mechanism and purpose are quite different.
Infrared Saunas: It's About Heat
An infrared sauna uses far-infrared wavelengths (typically 3,000nm and above) to heat your body from the inside out. The main benefit is sweating. Lots of sweating. The heat raises your core temperature, improves circulation, and helps with detoxification. It feels great and has real benefits, but the primary mechanism is thermal.
Red Light Therapy: It's About Cellular Energy
Red light therapy uses visible red light (630-670nm) and near-infrared light (810-850nm). These wavelengths don't heat you up significantly. Instead, they interact directly with your mitochondria to boost cellular energy production. The goal isn't to make you sweat. It's to make your cells function better.
Key Differences
- Saunas heat your body. Red light therapy works at the cellular level without significant heat.
- Saunas use far-infrared wavelengths. Red light uses visible red and near-infrared.
- Sauna sessions typically last 20-45 minutes. Red light sessions are often 10-20 minutes.
- Saunas are great for relaxation and sweating. Red light is better for targeted pain relief and tissue repair.
- You can't easily target a specific body part with a sauna. Red light can be focused on exactly where you need it.
Neither one is "better" overall. They do different things. But if you're dealing with a specific injury, inflammation, or pain condition, red light therapy is going to be more targeted and more effective than sitting in a sauna. Read more about how red light therapy works.
“We like saunas too. But when a client comes in with a torn rotator cuff, we're reaching for the red light panel, not a sauna session.”
