What Is Vibroacoustic Therapy? (And Why You'll Fall Asleep On the Mat)

5 min read

Vibroacoustic therapy uses low-frequency vibrations you feel through your whole body. It's deeply relaxing, sometimes too relaxing.

Picture this: you're lying on a mat, and you can feel bass-like vibrations moving through your entire body. Not like a massage chair at the mall, but more like a deep, resonant hum that seems to settle into your bones. Within about five minutes, you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks. That's vibroacoustic therapy, and it's one of the most underrated modalities we offer at DWT Wellness.

How Vibroacoustic Therapy Works

Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) uses speakers or transducers embedded in a mat or table to deliver low-frequency sound waves, typically between 30 and 120 Hz, directly into your body. You're not just hearing the sound. You're feeling it. These vibrations travel through your tissues, muscles, and even your organs. The effect is a deep physical relaxation that's almost impossible to achieve any other way.

What Does the Research Say?

VAT has been studied for pain management, anxiety reduction, blood pressure regulation, and even symptom relief in conditions like fibromyalgia and Parkinson's. A study from the NIH found that vibroacoustic therapy significantly reduced pain and anxiety in patients after surgery. The research is still growing, but what exists is promising, and our clients' experiences line up with what the studies show.

  • Promotes deep muscle relaxation
  • May reduce blood pressure and heart rate
  • Helps with chronic pain and tension
  • Activates the parasympathetic nervous system
  • Often used alongside other sound therapy modalities
I fell asleep in the first three minutes. When I woke up, my lower back pain, which I've had for months, was noticeably better. I don't fully understand how it works, but it does. (DWT Wellness client)

What to Expect at Your Session

You lie down fully clothed on the vibroacoustic mat. We'll adjust the frequencies based on what you're looking to address: relaxation, pain relief, or general wellness. Sessions run about 20–30 minutes. Most people feel deeply relaxed, and yes, a lot of people fall asleep. That's totally fine. Your body does the work whether you're awake or not.
