PEMF Frequency Settings: What Different Frequencies Do

5 min read

Not all PEMF frequencies are the same. Different settings target different problems. Here's what you should know.

One thing that confuses people about PEMF is that different devices use different frequencies, and not all frequencies do the same thing. This isn't a case of "more is better." It's more like tuning a radio to the right station. The wrong frequency won't hurt you, but it might not give you the results you're looking for.

Frequency Basics

PEMF frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz), which just means pulses per second. A 10 Hz setting means the device sends 10 electromagnetic pulses per second. Most therapeutic PEMF devices operate somewhere between 1 Hz and 100 Hz, though some go higher.

What Different Ranges Are Used For

  • 1-10 Hz: Bone healing, deep tissue repair, sleep improvement, and general relaxation.
  • 10-30 Hz: Pain relief, inflammation reduction, and nerve repair. This is the most commonly used range.
  • 30-50 Hz: Muscle recovery, improved circulation, and wound healing.
  • 50-100 Hz: Acute pain management and muscle stimulation. Used more for short-term relief.

Why It Matters

Your body's cells respond to specific frequencies. Bone cells, for example, respond best to low frequencies around 7-8 Hz. Soft tissue tends to respond well to slightly higher frequencies. This is why a good PEMF practitioner doesn't just turn on the machine and leave. The settings matter.

At DWT Wellness, we adjust the frequency and intensity based on what you're dealing with. A fracture client gets a very different protocol than someone coming in for post-workout recovery. It's not one-size-fits-all.

We've found that clients who've tried PEMF elsewhere without results often just had the wrong settings. A small adjustment in frequency can make a surprising difference.
