Can Compression Therapy Help With Varicose Veins?

5 min read

Varicose veins are more than cosmetic. They can ache and swell. Here's what compression therapy can and can't do for them.

Let's get one thing straight right away: compression therapy won't make varicose veins disappear. If someone tells you that, they're not being honest. But can it help with the symptoms, like the aching, the heaviness, the swelling? Absolutely. And for a lot of people, that's what matters most.

What Are Varicose Veins, Really?

Varicose veins happen when the one-way valves inside your veins stop working properly. Blood that's supposed to flow back up to your heart ends up pooling in the vein, causing it to swell and become visible under the skin. They're not just a cosmetic issue. They can cause real discomfort. Aching, throbbing, heaviness, itching, and swelling are all common. Standing or sitting for long periods usually makes everything worse.

How Compression Therapy Helps the Symptoms

NormaTec's sequential compression acts like an external pump for your circulatory system. It pushes blood upward through your legs, reducing the amount of blood that pools in those damaged veins. This takes pressure off the vein walls and gives you relief from that heavy, achy feeling. Many of our clients with varicose veins say a session leaves their legs feeling noticeably lighter for days afterward.

  • Reduces pooling of blood in affected veins
  • Decreases swelling and leg heaviness
  • May slow the progression of vein issues when used regularly
  • Works well alongside medical treatments your doctor recommends

Important Caveats

If you have severe varicose veins, blood clots (DVT), or active skin infections near the affected area, you should talk to your doctor before trying compression therapy. We always ask about these things during your first visit. Safety comes first, period.

I've had varicose veins for years and they ache constantly. NormaTec doesn't cure them, but it gives me hours of relief every time. That's worth a lot. (DWT Wellness client, Cedar Knolls)
