How Often Should You Do Red Light Therapy?

Too little won't help. Too much might waste your time. Here's the sweet spot for red light therapy session frequency.

"Can I do this every day?" and "Is once a month enough?" are two questions we hear constantly. The answer lands somewhere in between, and it depends on what you're trying to achieve.

General Frequency Guidelines

  • Acute injuries or post-surgery: 4-5 sessions per week for the first 1-2 weeks, then 2-3 per week.
  • Chronic pain conditions: 3 sessions per week for the first month, then 1-2 per week.
  • Skin health and anti-aging: 2-3 sessions per week consistently for best results.
  • General wellness and maintenance: 1-2 sessions per week.
  • Athletic recovery: Post-workout as needed, typically 2-4 times per week.

Can You Overdo It?

Sort of. There's a concept in photobiomodulation called the biphasic dose response. Basically, there's an optimal dose window. Too little light and you don't get enough stimulus. Too much and the benefits plateau or slightly diminish. This isn't dangerous (you won't hurt yourself with extra sessions), but you'll waste time and money without added benefit.

For most people, 15-20 minute sessions are the sweet spot. Going longer than that per area doesn't produce proportionally better results. It's better to be consistent with shorter sessions than to do occasional marathon sessions.

Consistency Over Intensity

Just like PEMF therapy, red light therapy works best when you show up regularly. Three sessions per week for a month will outperform ten sessions crammed into two weeks. Your cells need repeated stimulation to make lasting changes.
