They're often grouped together, but red light and near-infrared light have different wavelengths and different strengths. Here's what matters.
When people talk about "red light therapy," they're often lumping two different things together. Visible red light and near-infrared light both have therapeutic benefits, but they penetrate your body to different depths and are better suited for different conditions. Understanding the difference helps you get better results.
Red Light (630-670nm)
This is the visible red light, and you can see it when the device is on. It penetrates the skin about 1-2 centimeters. That makes it great for surface-level issues: skin conditions, wounds, scars, wrinkles, and superficial inflammation. It's what's primarily responsible for the collagen production boost that everyone talks about.
Near-Infrared Light (810-850nm)
Near-infrared (NIR) is invisible. You can't see it, though you might feel a slight warmth. It penetrates much deeper, reaching muscles, joints, tendons, and even bone. This is the workhorse for deep tissue healing, joint pain, nerve repair, and internal inflammation.
Quick Comparison
- Red light: Shallower penetration. Best for skin, surface wounds, and cosmetic benefits.
- Near-infrared: Deeper penetration. Best for joints, muscles, nerves, and deep tissue.
- Red light: Visible glow. Near-infrared: Mostly invisible.
- Both: Boost mitochondrial function and ATP production.
- Both: Reduce inflammation, just at different tissue depths.
Which One Should You Use?
Ideally, both. Most professional-grade devices, including what we use at DWT Wellness, combine red and near-infrared wavelengths in the same panel. That way you get surface-level and deep-tissue benefits simultaneously. You don't have to choose.
“The best results we see come from combination wavelengths. Treating just the surface or just the deep tissue only gives you half the picture.”
